Update: June 4, 2009

Over the past twelve months The Klamath Basin Alliance, Inc. has collected over 640 signatures opposing the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement (KBRA). Our primary objections to the KBRA as stated in our petition are summarized below:

• The purchase of 92,000 acres with taxpayer’s money for The Klamath Tribes. This property could then be placed in trust and then traded for public forestland. It also removes the land from tax rolls as well as placing it off limits to the public.

• Removal of dams at a cost upwards of $4 billion dollars. There is no credible science that dam removal will aid the fish.

• There is no guaranteed water for project irrigators. The Biological Opinion still rules. Water for fish takes precedent over water for irrigation. Off-project irrigators are asked to give up 30,000 acre-feet of water.

Separate petitions that other groups have initiated and distributed have been included with ours to total over 1,800 signatures. These petitions have been presented to our county, state and federal representatives. Members of KBA have attended numerous public meetings, contacted our representatives, and given testimony regarding our opposition to the KBRA that as stated above will remove four and possibly five dams on the Klamath River along with the purchase of 92,000 acres for The Klamath Tribes.

Most recently we have joined with groups from other organizations to not only increase our numbers, while remaining a separate entity, but by enlarging our base so we may mutually draw upon each other’s expertise.

We highly recommend the Klamath Basin Crisis (KBC) website as a valuable tool to educate yourself on the history as well as current events regarding the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement. While you can read an earlier document of the KBRA on this website, a much later version is available on the KBC website. In fact one whole page is devoted to the agreement with links to other sources. Go to www.klamathbasincrisis.org. for facts and commentaries.
